Who is eligible?

  • Private homes
  • Apartment residences
  • Businesses and storefronts
  • Non-profits and other community organizations
  • Houses of worships
  • Schools
  • Public parks
  • Probably any other type of space you can think of!

What are the requirements to get certified?

  • Your site is within Benton County, Oregon
  • Your habitat area is at least 50 square feet (this can include garden beds and other containers)
  • You have enrolled as a Nature Neighbors site steward
  • You perform the minimum required number of actions for each program area (Native Plants, Invasive Plants, Soil, Water, and Wildlife)
  • You welcome program staff to your site at least twice: one for the initial visit, and again to confirm you have completed all certification requirements.
  • You submit your completed Certification Checklist via this website.

How does it work?

1. Review the Certification Requirements below

2. Enroll as a site steward and pay the enrollment fee to get connected with program staff and schedule a visit

3. Get a site visit from one of our technicians to review program requirements, share your goals, and receive advice and guidance

4. Use the Knowledge Center and Resource Library to complete the required number of items for each of the 5 program areas

5. Submit your completed checklist via this website

6. Get a final site visit from a technician to confirm completion, and receive your metal certification yard sign!

What if I can't afford it?

We get it - creating habitat can be expensive! That's why we offer enrollment fees on a sliding scale - you can determine how much you are able to pay. For those with significant financial burdens, we plan to offer mini scholarships of between $100 and $250 to help site stewards purchase plants, tools, or whatever they need to create their habitat. Check back soon for scholarship rules and application!

We want this program, and backyard conservation, to be accessible to ALL! If you find yourself struggling to pay for your project, please reach out.

What if I've never done this before and I'm not sure how to start?

You are welcome too, and we're here to help! Our team has put together an extension collection of resources, curated for our specific Certification Requirements, at our Knowledge Center. Your site technician will work with you to answer questions, plan your project, and connect you to resources throughout the process. We also have a Nature Neighbors Facebook Group where site stewards can share pictures, experiences, and inspiration. Hope to see you there!
